A compact home baking note presents two bar cookie recipes. The First Layer Bars use margarine sugar eggs vanilla unsweetened chocolate salt baking powder flour and nuts in a 9x13 pan baked 25 minutes. Second layer marshmallows melt atop. Third layer combines chocolate chips peanut butter and Rice Krispies. The Fruit Cocktail Bars mix sugar flour baking soda salt with fruit cocktail, bake in a greased 12x15 pan, then frost with a sugary butter evaporated milk and nut topping.

Plymouth county chapter of the American Cancer Society met Monday November 14 in Le Mars with 12 members present. Mrs Robert Pratt presided and Rev A D Imbrock offered the invocation. Pratt reported inservice training for area nurses and nursing home staff at Westmar College on October 4 and six more sessions planned in Iowa this year. A health program kit for K-3 pupils titled An Early Start to Good Health was discussed as available through area education agency 12. Peter VanderMeer Jr. reported one financial aid request and one hospital bed loan. Dave Albert noted the Des Moines state annual meeting results October 21–22 and Gilbert Winter announced the Great American Smoke Out on November 17 with local businesses Jake’s Pizza and KLEM promoting non smoking. Winter said school information exists for ages 9–12 beginning to smoke. Next board meeting set for February 13, 1978. attendees listed from Le Mars and Remsen.
Carrie Westberg of Clear View Manor in West Bend celebrated her 103rd birthday. She enjoys playing the harmonica reading her daily Bible lesson and visiting the West Bend Journal.
AG NEWS reports the Liberty Johnson Farm Bureau women met November 8 at Mrs. Frank Morehead’s home. Cleo Tindall led with pledge prayer and a Harvest Dream poem. Officers presented reports and year projects included gifts for Akron Nursing Home Glenwood Iowa Activity Center Le Mars.
ACT production review notes Akron Community Theatre’s opening of Bell, Book, and Candle at Ye Olde Opera House. Despite a blizzard and limited rehearsal time, the cast delivers solid performances led by Dew Ann Elkin as Gillian. Jeff Bouwman and Dennis Hultgren also receive praise for handling pressure and small roles with skill. Overall, the show shines despite absences and pacing in the middle act.
Iowa study findings push a bachelor of liberal studies option for nontraditional students. The program, launched by regents universities, allows part time study with off campus courses and campus faculty support. A brochure is available from the Le Mars extension office for details on ISU and UI plans and UNI participation.
Akron residents and friends filled the nursing home visiting list with arrivals from Akron Sioux City Le Mars and Hawarden. The Rural Home Culture Club baked cookies while members hosted Thanksgiving activities and church ladies supplied treats.
In the city election Edwin Repp was chosen mayor with Frank Hemmerrick as city clerk. Josephine DeRaad was re elected town treasurer. Council seats go to Chuck Renken Rich Renken Art DeRaad Gus Beech and Tim Repp. Community events include church dinners council meetings and numerous local visits and gatherings.
