Remembering a Dakota blizzard of 1888 in Jerauld County

The recollection recalls January 13 1888 when Coleman Harrington and neighbor Adolphus Barber planned to travel to Wessington Springs. A boil kept Baker home, possibly saving others who faced the storm. Charles Hanson described riding out with cattle, while Miss Addie Knierum safeguarded her pupils by sheltering in a straw stack. her feet later required amputation. Knierum, fiance of William Homer, connected to Milo Mills' family and Amy Amos, later Mrs Small, ties to local Westfield figures.

Westfield family recalls 1888 blizzard ordeal at home

In reminiscences from Westfield, a family describes moving from a hotel with two sons, George and Gene, during the 1888 snowstorm. The father tied a line from the house to the barn to reach the barn for chores as snow drifted to the roof, with Mrs. Jennie Lilly noted in the account.
