London reports a four week lull in Flanders fighting followed by storms and continued shelling at long range. Germans attack near Ypres with heavy losses repulsed, but no decisive gains. Weather hampered progress as both sides stay entrenched.
Nov 10 reporting soldiers in drenched trenches endure rain and shellfire as German and Allied lines clash along the Yser canal and near Ypres. French staff say Germans driven to the right bank, left bank evacuated, and Allied counteroffensives south of Ypres inflicted heavy German losses. Berlin HQ notes slight right wing progress as Emperor appears at Kolmar. Petrograd cites advances in eastern Prussia along Stalupolen Johannisburg Soldau and Neidenburg sectors.
London reports indicate the 25 000 ton first line battleship Audacious, commissioned in 1912, may have been lost near a mine or magazine explosion in the Trish sea. The Olympic is still afloat, with admiralty conceding possible distress. German submarines are also said to be lost per Standard reports though unconfirmed.
London reports that after the Germans captured Dixmude on Tuesday they were driven out today with heavy losses. The defenders stood the terrific fire bravely and refused to budge.
The report notes German positions unchanged in many areas of West Flanders. British resistance around Ypres remains strong as German attempts to break through fail. A French marine bayonet counterattack causes retreat when faced with heavy artillery and superior force. A bulge near La Basse also appears unsuccessful.
French and German reports relay heavy bombardments and large troop actions near Ypres on November 14. German and French forces claim substantial enemy losses with hundreds of prisoners taken and lines briefly breached but repulsed.
Russian forces report gains in East Prussia and Galicia with battles near Staliuponen Sodau Thorn and Ryfoin while advancing toward Domaietz in Galicia. Krosno captured with heavy enemy losses. Reports from the theater of hostilities say Russian cavalry, once beaten near Kolo 46 miles northeast of Kallecy in Russian Poland, resume movements then fail to break east of Kallas. The notice claims no invasion danger to Silestz remains, with fresh battles along Hydtkuhnen on the Prussian frontier and southeast of the Mazurian outlet, no decision reached.
Nov 12 naval successes for Britain include the destruction of the German cruiser Emden after engagement with the Australian cruiser Sydney in the Cocos Islands and the trapping of Koenigsberg near Mafia island by the Chatham. Also reports of German flyers killed over England and a plan to raise British forces by 1,000,000 men.
Western Union News from San Francisco describes the Panama Pacific Exposition to open on February 20 1916 with a record building completion. Exhibits arrive daily including thousands of bulbs flowers and plant shipments from Japan Canada Holland Philippines Argentina England Germany and more. The expansive grounds feature a two and a half mile bay shore amphitheater and a garden city of green domes red tiled roofs with tens of thousands of blossoms and millions of bulbs to welcome visitors.
The twelve Federal Reserve banks begin operations in Boston New York Philadelphia Richmond Atlanta Chicago Cleveland Minneapolis Kansas City St Louis Dallas and San Francisco rediscounting notes drafts and bills. They will gradually assume more functions under the Currency Act while sites and directors are established for each bank.
Chicago’s Union stock yards and packing houses, scrubbed and disinfected after nine days of government and state anticontagion efforts, reopen with all parts declared sanitary and free of disease risk. Lincoln Neb pistol duel leaves two officers shot. Frank Rocke fatally struck in abdomen and Z C Hanning shot in groin. Washington DC state dept messages from Mexico arrive, officials doubtful about southern republic developments.
Iowa's corn crop reached 389 million bushels, up 24 million from October estimates, with a Nov 1 value of 27.25 million dollars at 61 cents per bushel. Wheat fell about 2 million bushels to 14.814 million, priced at 96 cents, while oats yield reached 16.657 million with price 39 cents and potatoes rose to 13.6 million.
A Dubuque woman aged twenty from West Union was acquitted by a jury on murder charges for smothering her newborn last July. The trial found her mentally incompetent at the time. She had taken the infant from Dubuque to West Union the morning after birth.
Henry Terry's farm near Council Bluffs was the site of a neighborly effort as twenty farmers came together to husk and crib 50 bushels of corn stored for Terry who is ill. They also hauled twenty acres of corn fodder to the barn for winter use.
Swift punishment was meted out here to a poultry thief. Albert Strief stole 120 ducks from John Lunbeck of North Fork Tuesday night, arrested Wednesday, arraigned the same day, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to two years in the penitentiary at Fort Madison, beginning service in the same institution.
Native Iowan George A. Carlson born October 23, 1876 at Alta. His family moved to a Denver area farm in 1880. Carlson attended Bartlett public schools near Barnum and rose to prominence as governor elect of Colorado.
Iowa apple king F P Spencer of Randolph will be a principal speaker at the fortieth annual state convention of the Southwestern Iowa Horticultural society to be held in Atlantic on December 1 and 2. Goldfield Paper Sold to H W Mitchell. Noting a change of ownership, Mitchell, from Canby Minnesota, will assume control of the Goldfield Chronicle and operate the paper from now on, with Agard moving to a farm near Ceylon Minnesota.
The cornerstone ceremony for the German Theological Seminary in Wardburg was held in Dubuque. Rev. F. Richer of Clinton led the services during the event.
A fire on the Pat Swain farm near here destroyed all buildings except the residence. The large new barn housed 3,000 bushels of grain. Total loss estimated at about 4,000 dollars.
James L. Umphreys, 38, died after a mule kicked him. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Umphreys of Stennett and left a widow and five children. He had lived for several years at Oduholt.
Prof. A T Orwin notes state farmers could buy more autos if they grow onions as in Pleasant Valley. Local fields yield 400 to 500 bushels per acre with prices from 1 to 1.50 dollars. A grower with 14 acres earned about 700 dollars per acre.
Carl Barwieck an elderly Davenport resident donates his 1608 Wittenberg printed German Bible as a treasured family heirloom to the German war relief fund. He offers it to raise money for the fatherland, hoping buyers will contribute several hundred dollars for the cause. Wealthy Germans plan to purchase and present it to the Academy of Sciences.
A dispute over two chairs led to a deadly shooting and knife wounds in Sioux City. Charles Alvano was shot in the back and is expected to die. Charles Sarvioli was shot in the chest, and Arse Coiro suffered two stab wounds to the back.
Elmer Margnium and his wife were bound over to the grand jury on robbery charges after they allegedly robbed an auto man driving them across the country, binding and gagging him and stealing the automobile.
Des Moines society columns announce the marriage of Mrs Dillg King Bell to Dr W W Pearson, a wealthy specialist. The notice references a recent breach of promise suit by Mrs Olive Love seeking 150000 dollars, creating intrigue around the wedding and ongoing litigation.
