Akron Community high school honors list honors students by grade and GPA across freshman sophomores juniors and seniors. The principal Willis Hoff notes the 4.0 3.5 and 3.0 distinctions with many named students across each class and honor level.
Preston Pearls 4-H members met November 6 at the Hortons home with 11 in attendance. They reviewed secretary and treasurer reports, noted dues of 1.20 due next meeting, planned cookie favors for a nursing home at Thanksgiving, and scheduled a roller skating party for November 24 at Roller-Rama. The Christmas party is set for December 8 at Nancy Koch’s home at 6:30 p.m. Gift exchange will precede Pizza Hut supper. Officers will be elected for the 1977 club year. Shelly Horton reported and hosted lunch.
The Home Culture Club gathered Tuesday November 16 at Robert Dirks home. Sonna Trotzig reviewed the book The Peter Pan by Dr. Andrew Peter.
Friendship and Service members met Oct. 28 at city hall with 20 in attendance. They announced a school playground equipment fundraising project with initial $25 deposits at Akron Savings Bank and First National Bank, aiming for $3,000. A public safety program by Kaye Erks featured a Iowa highway patrol film.
A list of November and December church and club meetings including Christian Women Fellowship Embroidery club and Immanuel Lutheran Bible study on various Thursdays. Also notes Union Thanksgiving service at Wesley United Methodist, St Patrick’s parish fair and Holiday Craft Sale dates.
The production of Where's Charley? is under way with the cast rehearsing music and lines. Performances are scheduled for Friday Saturday and Sunday December 3 4 and 5 at 8 p.m. Members should renew by mailing a check to ACT or calling Mrs. Dave Nelson. reservations begin November 29 and run through December 5 with Peg McLane managing bookings.
Border Belles 4-H met November 8 at the Pride home hosted by Joanne and Janelle Pride with Jamie Shay and others present. Treasurers report showed $98.48 on hand and record books must be turned in for premium money.

A clinic to teach dismantling cleaning and reassembly of sewing machines is set for Wednesday December I. Workshops led by Elizabeth Easton extension clothing specialist run 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Alcester auditorium and 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Elk Point city auditorium. Open to all homemakers.
The 4-H Awards night will be held Saturday at 8:00 p.m. in Le Mars Community junior high auditorium. Mark Settle notes the event honors county 4-H members, with 61 junior awards and a Master Cattle Feeder trophy donated by Le Mars Hatchery and Feed. Also named are advanced cattle feeder jackets from the cattlemen’s association and the theme 4-H ’76 Spirit of Tomorrow.
Obituaries note Mrs Ward Smith of O Neill Nebr 64 died November 11 1976 after long illness. Service held November 15 at Wesley United Methodist Akron burial Riverside under Schroeder Funeral Home. Born Marie Rozell April 27 1912 Akron married December 15 1932 Elk Point S D farmed Akron Westfield area moved to O Neill 1955. Survivors include husband four sons one daughter six brothers five sisters and 13 grandchildren. Pallbearers listed. Also Virgil D Tammen 44 of Farmer City Ill died November 11 1976 after apparent heart attack. Funeral February 2 1971 details noted with Brunsville Legion club and Maple Grove Cemetery. Mrs Garland Ellis 87 of Hawarden died November 19 1976. service November 16 Hawarden United Methodist Church burial Grace Hill Hawarden. Born Andrea Fredrickson February 22 1889 Germany. married December 30 1908 Akron. lived Hawarden Clinton Minneapolis Hawarden. Survived by two daughters a son a sister six grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Harry J Ball 78 of Akron died November 11 1976 in Akron Hospital after long illness. Born September 25 1898 in Union County SD. veteran of World War II. member of Hoschler Post 186 American Legion and Modern Woodmen of America. Survived by brother Julius Ball and half-siblings and several others. Funeral November 13 1976 Schroeder Funeral Chapel. interment Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
J Earl Merrigan 74 of Burbank South Dakota died November 12 1976 at Dakota Hospital Vermillion after a brief illness. Services were held at St Mary Catholic Church Garryowen with Rev Jerome Holtzman assisted by Rev James Doyle and Rev Leonard Fox. Burial in parish cemetery under Wagner Iverson funeral home Vermillion. He was born May 25 1902 in Union County SD and was a lifelong farmer and trucker. He married Hazel Blair September 3 1930 in Vermillion and was a member of St Mary Catholic Church. Survivors include his widow six daughters five sons two sisters one brother and 14 grandchildren.
Visitors from Akron, Le Mars, Cedar Rapids and beyond called on residents including Lizzie Gibbons and Jim Trautt. Socials featured cookie baking by 4-H members, a Pops Concert attendance, bingo for fruit prizes, hymn singing, and a funeral attendance for Floyd Davis. Communities from Kriske and Hawarden to So. Haven and Sioux City participated in this week’s events.
Grace M Beck of Chatsworth and Raymond Jensen, formerly of Sioux Falls, united in marriage last week in Kansas. After a southern wedding trip they will live in Chatsworth. A daughter Dana Marie was born Monday Nov. 15 to Terry and Dana Singer of Hawarden weighing 7 pounds 7% ounces and 20 inches. Grandparents Mr and Mrs Bill Miller Akron and Mr and Mrs Vernon Singer Le Mars. Great grandparents include Clarence Miller Akron Delores Erickson Denver and Carrie Swisher Merrill.
