Leading African American educator Booker T. Washington, founder and president of the Tuskegee Institute, dies after a nervous breakdown and arteriosclerosis. Born enslaved near Halseford, Virginia, he organized the Industrial School for Negroes in 1881, expanding it to 3,500 acres and nearly 100 buildings. Washington received honorary degrees from Harvard in 1896 and Dartmouth in 1901.
