President Wilson appeals at Buffalo to unite labor and capital in the war, denounces pacifists, and warns that Germany seeks world domination. He praises Samuel Gompers, calls for joint action, and urges collaboration to speed victory while protecting workers’ rights and preventing lawlessness.
Western newspaper reports that China filed a protest with the State Department via minister W Wellington Koo objecting to any agreement affecting its interests without Chinese consent. Tokyo unofficially noted a similar protest. Secretary Lansing defended the open door while China rejects special interests based on proximity. The Chinese government is unwilling to subscribe to such a theory.
Six cent bread was placed on sale at 10 Ideal retail counters in an experiment by the Minnesota public safety commission. One pound loaves sold over the counter unwrapped, triggering price reductions by other dealers. Similar trials in milk, potatoes, and other commodities are planned once bread prices settle.

Governor Lowden visits a Central Illinois unit, Danny Dodge in the 249th Infantry, who are reviewed as the fittest contingent in marching order. The parade lasts about 20 minutes as the band plays The Officer of the Day. Lowden and party dine with Company A.
Parregut Bunker Bros of Hamburg, buyers of walnut logs, shipped from Farragut about thirty carloads of logs. It is understood all have been wired into the manufacture of airplane bodies for the United States government. The factory is located in Missouri.
Woodbury County board hears state examiner's report on charges totaling 1017.00 against Sheriff E G Dilley. Dilley admits figures but defends entitlement to charges after an audit by H B Ros enkrank.
A 16 year old, Jaculty Leo Ziegmann, was found not guilty of murdering his father, John Zesmans, who was killed during a quarrel with the mother present. The trial revealed the father had been cruel to family members.
Two young women Hi- Bie Hargens and Ida Knudsen, daughters of prominent families, were lured from town by two young men who attempted to assault them. Knudsen escaped, while Hargens was dragged to the roadside and left unconscious, later found.
Ames college exceeded quota by subscribing 20875 to the YMCA war fund drive in a mass meeting led by Sergt C Connor and Dad Brett. A large blackboard showed 16000 first, then every pledge was recorded as the total grew to 20875 before the campaign ended.
Government estimates total cost of Camp Dodge for the Eighty eighth division at more than five and a half million dollars with six point four million spent by October. Iowa North Dakota Minnesota and part of Illinois trainees await preliminary training for service in France. Original five and a quarter million appropriation increased over time, total now about five million nine hundred seventy thousand dollars, with engineers praising Chas Weltz Sons for the cantonment work. The project nears completion and the camp may be handed to the camp quartermaster soon.

Railroad man Killiad Reydel, 24, son of A and wife of Harlan, a brake man on Rock Island, died at Atlantic hospital from injuries in a local crash. He leaves a widow. Grundy Center farmer Fred Pabst was arrested by Deputy U.S. Marshal Hedley for failing to register for the draft. Officials claim his marriage certificate shows him twenty nine and church records indicate birth in 1886, with a $1,000 bond set for February district court hearing.
Washington sees a possible November 15 session to accelerate U S aid to Italy as the administration considers sending troops if feasible. Gen Pasquale Tozzi, head of the Italian military mission, confirmed U S willingness to help Italy while the United States has not declared war on Austria. Washington Halloween observances ended in sadness as the city closed 1000 year old balloons and saloons at midnight.
Nineteen divers lost their lives as fires raged and the Paterson Salvation Army Rescue Mission in Paterson New Jersey was destroyed. Dozens were injured and authorities investigated the blaze as security and rescue crews responded quickly.
