October weekends were dark and dreary with a Vikings game flop followed by a nap. Hunters trespass on farms, some geese are shot, parking issues anger workers at Akron Savings Bank, and Ridgewood apartments prepare moving days with an open house on November 14. A mother learns her child joined the after school Brownies club named Cupcake Club.

Members of Friendship and Service club met October 13 at Penny Hartmanns to discuss a new fund raising project selling crystal etched ornaments for the school playground fund. A second meeting October 27 featured Jerry Olson as guest speaker on juvenile probation. Ornaments are available from club members and Boyd Veterinary clinic for 3 dollars.
Dr. Bob Smith former philosophy professor at Bethel College will speak at Big Springs Baptist church at 7 30 p m Monday Nov 14 and Alcester Baptist church at 7 30 p m Tuesday Nov 15 The public is invited to attend Smith known worldwide draws on academic study and humor His Hawarden graduation talks in 1953 and 1954 drew repeat bookings
The West-Port Farm Bureau met in Carol Krokshs home with 13 members. Ardella Hodgson county president spoke on county news and handed out officer worksheets. Ray Kennedy of Floyd Valley Pack will speak November 7 on meat cooking and preservative free sausages and bacon.
Keion John Nostadt was born October 15 1977 to Mr and Mrs William Nostadt of Spring Mount PA. He weighed 7 pounds 9 ounces and has a sister Wendy. Grandparents Frank Nostadt Philadelphia and Mr and Mrs Joe Wise Akron. Great grandmother Mrs John Schuning Minden IA. Mrs Joe Wise visited the Nostadt home for several weeks. Also a daughter Jessica Ann born October 19 1977 to Mr and Mrs Gary Kruse Paullina IA at Orange City hospital. She weighed 7 pounds 6 ounces. Grandparents Marti Jurgensen Arnold Kruse Alcester and Arval Jurgensen Akron Gust Steeneck Alcester and Louis Bangerter Kruse of Wabasso MN. Great grandparents Arval Jurgensen Akron and Christ Kruse Wabasso. Great great grandmother Mrs August Osterthun Akron. A daughter born November 3 1977 to Mr and Mrs Robert Pridie Akron at St Joseph hospital Sioux City.
A nursing home report thanks Rainbow Girls for Halloween favors and lists numerous visitors from Akron Sioux City and Westfield. Anna Ericson celebrated her birthday on November 4 with family cake and ice cream. The editor is bedridden a few days with a bad leg.
Akron couple Mr. and Mrs. Francis Hazel announce the engagement of their daughter Lori to Mark Horton son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Horton Akron. Lori a graduate of Akron Community high school is a student at St Luke s school of nursing. Fiance Mark is employed by Hawarden of Iowa Inc. The couple plans a July wedding.
A Good News seminar for northwest Iowa residents will run 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday Nov 11 at St. John’s American Lutheran Church Le Mars. Sponsored by the American Bible Society with Eunice Easton of Merrill as local chairman. Participants will receive scripture publications.
Akron public library readies for Children's Book Week November 14 through 20 under the national theme Read All About It. The library expands its children's juvenile and young adult sections with new books and invites families to celebrate and participate.
Union County 4-H leaders will host the annual recognition event Friday evening November 18 at 8 00 at Elk Point city auditorium. The final 1976 77 4-H club year event will honor members for past year and prior years achievements. trophies and awards will be presented to junior and senior division winners and to alumni and supporters. premium money and achievement certificates will be distributed. all members and families are invited. Mr and Mrs Merle Fickbohm of Akron recently completed a two week tour visiting Washington DC New York City and staying with Mr and Mrs Harry Alers and with Mrs Tillie Stecker a former Akron resident in New Jersey
Airman Deborah L. Henke daughter of Mr and Mrs Leslie Henke Elk Point completed at Chanute AFB Illinois the technical training for jet engine mechanics. She is assigned to Offutt AFB Nebraska with a Strategic Air Command unit and earned college credit toward an associate in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force. A 1977 Akron Community High School graduate Henke now surveys and repairs turbojet and gas turbine engines.
The Akron public library shows a large round exhibit case with a November display of Swedish articles by Mrs. Fern Roy. The collection, reflecting Swedish heritage, includes hand made or carved items such as copper measuring cups lace weavings glassware books pewter paintings and wooden articles. The public is welcome to visit anytime.
A South Dakota Rural Electric Cooperative magazine highlights Jean Carlson of Akron as the contest winner with Ham and Cheese Soup and a deep fat fryer prize. Also shared is Dewey Lemon Salad using lemon jello, Mountain Dew, lemon pudding, and whipped topping, plus a potato onion cheese ham dish. Thanksgiving recipe ideas follow as hints for holiday meals.
Helge Karlsson, cousin of Pastor David Roy, arrived from Wimmerby Sweden for a two week vacation with the Roy family in Akron. The Swedish class honored him at a supper on Monday evening October 17. He also visited in Colorado and Junction City Kansas with four families and cousins, calling his third visit to our town very enjoyable.
Danish exchange student Charlotte Nyvang Andersen arrives from Fredriksund Denmark to live with the Milton Anderson family in rural Akron. Sixteen year old Charlotte will graduate in Denmark, attends Akron Community High School as a senior, and plans veterinary studies while enjoying volleyball swimming singing cooking and animal work. Her family includes father a computer engineer, mother a hospital secretary, and younger brother Bo aged fourteen.
