Mrs. Frank Mackey in charge of Westfield items. Congregational Ladies Aid meets at the church on Nov 46 at 2 pm with hostesses Evelyn Banks and Kathy Banks. Various social visits, church events, and PTA and guild meetings listed with hostesses and speakers. Calendar includes Carmen presentation, Red Cross talk, and Pilgrim Fellowship rally reports.
On Friday evening November 10 the Westfield School Gym will become the Plaza de Toros for a Carmen program by over forty Westfield High School singers. The chorus has prepared twelve chorus numbers and will appear in public Friday night, dressed in period costumes.
The program features gypsy, tourist, soldier, and peasant costumes with soloists Niki Horsley and Mary Blow as Carmen parts, Tom Martin as Don Jose, Dave Brundeen as Escamillo, Sheryl Banks as Michaela, John Jordt as Don Carlos, plus a patriotic opener by the Snappy Singers. The event starts at 8:00 with Carmen music to follow. Admission is one dollar per family.
The NROTC qualifying exam deadline nears with applications due by November 17 1967. The nationwide test on December 9 1967 opens the path to college education and a regular naval commission. Navy support covers tuition and provides a $50 monthly subsistence, plus at sea training summers. High school seniors and graduates 17 to 21 by July 1 1968 may apply for the Navy College Aptitude Test NCAT, with medical screening and January February 1968 finalization for those scoring qualifying.
Seven member soybean trade mission leaves October 28 for two weeks in the United Kingdom France Netherlands Spain and West Germany. Led by Edwin Jaenke and A Gourley, the team includes Albert Diamond William New Harris Barnes Otto Shaulte and Henning Jensen representing producers cooperatives and exporters. The mission seeks to identify needs to keep U S soybean exports expanding and to assess competition, supply, and market opportunities. Educational benefits under the new GI Bill are available to educationally disadvantaged veterans.
The Akron Volume Raider Review covers Akron Library Club officers for NWLSA, band trip to Brookings for Hobo Day with a parade and meal, and senior interviews and profiles. Christmas Seals will soon be mailed as a holiday tradition and strong ally in disease battles. Citizens are urged to contribute to the Christmas Seal Camp aten and to use Seely liberally on all letters and packages. Respond promptly. contributions are greatly appreciated.
Rural Home Culture Club and guests gathered November 3 at Trimuguel Lutheran church. Attending clubs included Women's Club of Hawarden Tuesday Club of Westfields Book and Thimble Ak Ron and Friendship and Service of Alwon. Mary Anderson and Beth Finzen hosted. Arley Philips prepared federated news. Francs Witt announced a superior rating for the club’s program books. Guest speaker Darrel Gerriets Chaplain Intern from the Mental Health Institute at Independence Town presented slides.
Farmers will gain about 400 million dollars more income from feed grains than this year and 200 million more than the 1966 peak. The plan is announced early to aid planning and price support via 1967 grain loans, storage payments, and a diversion cornerstone at 20 percent base acreage.
Amendment to the articles of incorporation adopted at a September 19 1967 special meeting of stockholders. Article II sets capital stock at 75000 divided into shares of 50. County extension director Lyte Mackey urges farmers to inspect corn roots for rootworm damage this fall. Entomologist Harold Gun and Gunderson note that some varieties resist rootworm while others do not and advise comparing yields with rootworm tests. European corn borer pressure in eastern Iowa has increased, causing many dropped ears and prompting farmers to consider harvesting and drying corn, with seed companies offering stiffer shapes to hold ears.
Secretary Udell warns population growth adds about thirty million people this year, comparable to California and New York combined, stressing no rapid food production decrease ahead. Public Savings Bonds constitute over 24 percent of the publicly held national debt, aiding the fight against inflation.
Town State University's Soil Judging team won first place at the Region Five competition held at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis on Oct. 28. Team members were Robert Wych, Wayne Bannart, Roger Link, and Les Lanyon, all agronomy majors from Iowa. Other teams included Nebraska, Minnesota, Kansas State, and Missouri. The top two teams qualify for the national contest in Manhattan, Kansas, May 10, 1968. Judging focused on evaluating site characteristics and soil properties.
