Iowa pheasant hunting opener to start November 9
Iowa's 1968 pheasant season opens Saturday November 9 and runs through December 31 from 8 AM to 4 30 PM daily. Most of the state is open except a southeast area bounded by Highways 60 92 218 and 34. Birds wintered well and nesting was strong with high production in good cover. Last year hunters bagged about 1 212 000 cock pheasants, keeping Iowa among top states for ringneck harvests. Best populations lie in west central and parts of southwest Iowa, with east central also good. Hunters should arrange hunting places beforehand and obtain landowner permission. Weather and cover will impact opening weekend. Also open Nov 9 through Dec 31 is Hungarian partridge with the same hours and a two bird daily limit. The partridge range is northwest and north-central Iowa west of Hwy 65 from the Minnesota line to Hwy 30 and north of 30 to 141 and north of 141 to Sioux City. Partridges are a bonus bird for pheasant hunters. GUARD Daniel Kuempel of Guttenberg reported a large garden gourds harvest this year, including an 85 inch long, eight and one-half pound gourd.
