Sugar Factory Opens at Waterloo Iowa
Waterloo Iowa's only beet sugar factory at Waverly began operations last week. It plans to process 45,000 tons of beets, with 10 percent grown in Bremer county, and anticipates producing about 9,000,000 pounds of sugar. Energy will come from oil and coal. 4,000 tons of coal are required. 125 cars of stone will clarify the sugar. The plant will run from Oct 15 to sometime in February, employing about 300 people.
