State Board Of Public Education Pushed For School Consolidation
An Iowa public education overview notes that schools are the community’s key industry and highlights decades of district consolidation. From 4,417 districts in 1955 to 1,391 by 1961, with rural one room schools shrinking from 3,261 to 256. It cites rising median enrollments in new districts and a broad tax base as keys to affordable, adequate education.
