Roosevelt Absolves Volunteers From Pact to Fight Abroad

Explosion at Republic Iron and Steel Plant Kills Four

A mysterious blast at the Republic Iron and Steel power plant in Youngstown Ohio killed four men and wounded eleven others, with five serious injuries. The roof was blown off and heavy machinery was hurled over a quarter to half a mile as investigators probe whether wartime plotters were involved.

J N Dutton of Mount Pleasant a wealthy landowner was killed when his car stalled on the Burlington crossing and was struck by a train. His daughter Miss Hxie Dutton escaped unharmed in this fatal accident.

Child Falls Into Ice Pool In Cesapool Tragedy

Two year old Henry Levin, son of Mr and Mrs Albert Levin, fell into a pool near his home while playing in Cesapool. His older siblings pulled him out but he suffocated in the pool bottom. Cedar Falls farmer H P Shadd, 63, died instantly after a wagon accident at his home. He is survived by a widow and several children.

British Prime Minister Proposes Ireland Home Rule Plan

London reports the British prime minister sent a letter to John Redmond outlining a settlement for home rule. The plan would immediately apply the home rule act to Ireland with six northeast Ulster counties excluded, subject to parliamentary reconsideration after five years.

Iowa Crops Report Shows Labor Shortage and Low Wheat

A statewide Iowa crops study by the extension department and Dr. George Mr Chappel reveals a severe farm labor shortage affecting about 60 percent of farms, a winter wheat deficit at a 36 percent of 1916 levels, and widespread seed shortages for corn, millet, and sudan grass. Spring wheat acreage up 7 percent. potato acreage up 8.8 percent. high quality seed corn with 95 percent germination and adequate supply. Havner enforces blue laws in Polk and Iowa counties, with no forecast of future bias. enforcement follows Sunday closing laws under section 3040 of the Code.

Battle of lawyers in Kelly murder trial forecast

The indictment charging Lyn George J. Kelly with the Villiscaux murders led to a forecast battle between lawyers. A. L. Red Cross Growth in Iowa Under Weaver Campaign

Since May 1 James B. Weaver became state director the Red Cross in Iowa has grown from 24 to 75 chapters and now includes members in nearly every community. Weaver aims to place a chapter in every county seat and hopes to recruit 100 000 members before the campaign ends. In Webster City a district court jury panel was dismissed as mostly farmers to allow them full time for farm work, with Judge B M McCall saying no jury trials will occur this term.

Government to Fix Coal Prices Petitioned by Davenport Dealers

Davenport condh dealers' club has sent representatives in congress a petition asking Congress to empower the government to take over all coal mines and fix prices beyond the current months. They say mine operators will not quote them prices for future delivery. Bridge Guards Battle Skulkers at Illinois Central Bridge. Federal guards at the bridge over the Missouri river exchanged fire with three men sneaking onto the structure. The guards fired 49 shots. the skulkers escaped. Formation of Ames Ambulance Unit for Foreign Service

Ameén Dean Marston of Iowa State College alleges word from the intercollegiate intelligence bureau, linked with the War Department, to form an ambulance corps of thirty nine men for foreign service. More than the required number volunteered due to opportunity with a friend group. The unit will have its own officers and will be sent immediately to France.

Guard First To 60 Will Train At Camp Dodge This Summer

Iowa guard plans to train at Camp Dodge in summer and in a southern department in winter before any deployment to Europe. Cavalry units face possible nondeployment. plans also call for a full regiment of Iowa artillery and camp sites at Storm Lake Mason City Cedar Rapids Ames and Waterloo.
