The May schedule includes a first horseshoe game vs Akron on Monday at 8:30 with St Catherine’s Guild serving lunches from 8:00. Eighth grade promotion and awards night on May 25 features Father Schiesel. all-school picnic May 26 with bus return at 2:30. Summer Bible school starts May 29. Centennial cavalcade and Miss Tova queen crowning May 10, dance at 9:00 with Gus Hahn orchestra to raise funds for a fire truck. Families invited.
The Iowa State Employment Service joins with local committees and agencies to support a youth opportunity campaign. Over 20 000 Iowa youths aged 16 to 21 seek summer jobs while employers report worker shortages. Nationally about 2 million youths will seek summer work this year, up 16 percent from last year. In 1986 Iowa offices logged 18 488 summer job seekers with 12 922 placed.
The 24th Annual Truckers Barbecue will May 19 in the Sioux City yards with a 5:30 p.m. barbecue for about 1000 truckers and wives. Raskin Packing prepares 700 lbs of aged prime beef, two tons of apple wood, and a sealed eight hour pit. A bowling tournament at Sioux Village Bowl runs 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with over 125 bowlers and $200 in cash prizes. The Truckers Queen interview starts at 5:00 p.m. with voting until 7:00 p.m. and crowning at 8:00 p.m., plus door prizes and a stockyandy marketeers dance.
Dr. W. L. Colville an Nebraska university researcher notes that growers can moderate weather impacts on corn through planning. Early planting narrow rows and proper population reduce frost risk wind damage and drought stress, while soil warmth from fall plowing aids spring emergence and pollination can be timed before rainfall slumps.
Shell Oil announces the National Drivers Test telecast on CBS May 23 4 for a safety award program aiming to reward safe driving. Awards include 10000 20 grants of 1000 and 10000 prizes of 6000 with potential doubling for defensive driving course takers.
Iowa farmers sent over 10000 postcards and letters to legislators in under a week urging tax revision action. Reports from 20 counties show about 1100 letters per county, with 3400 letters accounted for by 29 counties. Farm Bureau started the drive to press for relief without backing a specific proposal.
The May 11 meeting approved the 1967 68 curriculum and a lease with Wesley Methodist Church for Annex classrooms. Bus routes and driver salaries were set, noon routes priced, and a county wide Special Education four year program approved. Eighth grade graduation ceremonies were eliminated starting 1967 68, with timing adjustments due to parent clothing purchases. Staffing for 1967 68 is nearly complete, with two positions filled and others named for summer and recreation programs. Unemployed or underemployed Iowa residents may apply by June 5 for keypunch operator or combination welding training under the Manpower Development and Training Act. 20 will be selected for keypunch at Ottumwa and 15 for welding at Sioux City. Classes start June 12, lasting 12 to 14 weeks for keypunch and 16 weeks for welding. Selection is race color creed neutral. Details available at 34 Town State Employment Service offices.
