Westfield Club notes May activities and graduates

Westfield Tuesday Club met May 8 in Church Social rooms. Plans include attending Library Convention at LeMars and a May 23 picnic at the Church. Members discussed Political Propaganda. Record corn crop seen shrinking under feed grain program

Last year output reached 4.4 billion bushels with a high 52.2 bushels per acre. This year the crop is expected to fall as farmers participate in a new feed grain program that reduces cultivated acreage by 20 to 40 percent on individual farms.

Feed Grain Program Sees Wide Plymouth County Interest

DeKalb reports widespread acceptance with 76 percent participation cited. In dairy and heavy livestock areas, high yields and soil moisture prompt use of more commercial fertilizer and chemical weed controls. Plymouth County farmers still able to sign up. oats seeded qualify as diverted acres. 1260 farms already enrolled. Grazing restriction on diverted acres starts June 1 in Iowa. some delay filings due to mistaken belief of immediate effect.

Civil War Centennial Meeting at Cherokee

Sanford Museum hosted the Northwest Iowa Civil War Centennial group with about fifty attendees viewing_memorabilia and hearing W. K. Price review Iowa war heroes. Abe l Schiebult and A J Neumann demonstrated cavalry gear as four-man color guard performed for local observances. The area communities represented included Early Marathon Fort Dodge LeMars Orange City Quimby Sheldon Sioux Rapids Sutherland Cherokee. The next meeting at Sanford Museum is May 28 with Ralph Borreson presenting Lincoln’s Assassination.

Brule Creek Watershed District in South Dakota organized under the 1969 amend. act with C. O. Peterson elected chairman at Alcester meeting May 2. Wayne Christensen named contracting officer and secretary treasurer. The board includes Elmer Quamn vice chairman Gilbert Ustad Ralph Smith and Clifford Eideness. The area covers 184 145 acres across Lincoln and Union counties.
