Tornado Wrecks Marquette Kansas Killing and Injuring Dozens

A late night tornado swept Marquette Kansas and nearby areas causing twenty-nine deaths and forty-four injuries, with thirty-five seriously hurt. The cyclone struck the town’s southern edge, cut a wide swath through the center, and then moved into farm country, leaving residents buried in wreckage and many asleep at the time. Marquette, a 1500 resident town in McPherson County, lies near the Kansas center.

Treasure Worth 234700 Seized in St Joseph Missouri

Two disks said to be solid gold, valued at 34700, were seized at the Burlington road station by city detectives as they pursued an owner. John Bilby of Quitman Missouri attempted to withdraw 20000 to pay for the disks. a stranger accompanying him fled after detectives questioned him. The disks were brought to St Joseph from Omaha as ordinary baggage.

Confesses His Crime in Minnesota Slaying Case

Edward Gottschalk pleaded guilty to killing Hartmann and confessed to his role in both murders of Christian Schindeldecker a butcher. The February murder in the butcher shop followed a robbery motive. Gottschalk claims Hartmann killed Schindeldecker while he waited outside and that Hartmann later attacked him, prompting Gottschalk to kill Hartmann in self defense. Judge Lewis will sentence Thursday.

Murderer Hanged at Union for 1903 Detective Killing

William Rudolph was hanged in Union jail for part in the January 1903 killing of Detective Chas J Schumacher of St Louis at Rudolphs home near Stanton. Rudolph’s neck was not broken. he strangled thirteen minutes before death. He walked to the scaffold with a firm step and said nothing. About 200 witnesses observed the execution. Rudolph hoped for a last minute gubernatorial reprieve, failing to secure a stay from Gov Folk until Sunday night.

A small tornado struck the farm of County Treasurer Stephen Tillson about 4 50 p m Wednesday one and one half miles west of Turin. A farm house was blown down corn cribs and other buildings were destroyed with estimated losses around 300 dollars. Nearby county bridges suffered damage while rainfall measured two tenths of an inch in Ottawa with no further damage.

Windstorm damages barns and windmills near Charter Oak

A severe storm of wind rain and hail struck six miles east of Charter Oak damaging farms. At William Ackel hein’s farm barns and windmills were demolished, and Herman Schoebech’s barn was torn down as the storm crossed the road. Windows shattered and telephone lines wrecked.
