Captain Lord of the Leyland steamer California places near Titanic distance at under twenty miles detailing engines shut and wireless down in an ice field. Des Moines reports that track laying on the Allerton branch of the St Paul Kansas City Short Line is expected to start at Carlisle around June 1. The Rock Island cutoff section already lies in place to Des Moines with about 600 workers, steam shovels, teams, and construction trains active. The project involves sawing through bluffs, building fills, and bridging ravines and streams under the current contractor who will deliver a completed road bed for tracking.
