In winter isolation Roaring Bill Wagstaff and Hazel endure a harsh Yukon like life. Bill buys moccasins and teaches Hazel to hunt, fish, and ride. Hazel grows restless while Bill plans escape toward Bella Coola as spring breaks the snowbound frontier.
In Chapter Seven, The Fires of Spring, a blue misty sky yields to a fresh southwest breeze. Hazel roams outdoors without coat as winter recedes and sound of a midnight gale through trees unsettles her. The scene shifts to a restless, waking night full of sensory change.
As Hazel leaves with Bill Wagstaff aboard the Stanley D a foggy voyage begins toward the wharf and Vancouver. Wagstaff warns of danger to her safety and money while urging caution about Meadows and a possible return, giving cryptic advice and final goodbyes before the ship slips into deep water.
