Westfield groups push to keep local school open

Westfield residents at a February 29 meeting petitioned to keep the Kindergarten through High School in Westfield. A public meeting is planned for Saturday March 7 at 7 30 p m in the Westfield School Auditorium to organize a permanent group.

March school events and play cast announced

March calendar lists FHA and FFA activities and a library club meeting. Last Friday the school play directed by Mrs. Koch announced cast including Cornelia Mary Lynn Gossard Emily Judy Davis Leo Scott Swift Dick Tim Klauer and others with student directors Elaine Dewey chairing advertising and a committee handling costumes and properties plus staging and sound by a dedicated team.

Senior Dick Frerichs of A. H. S. spotlighted

Richard Frerichs known as Dick is honored as a senior. Born February 17, 1946, he is son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Frerichs with one brother and three sisters, attends St. Patrick's Church, favors steak dinners and Dean Martin or Sandra Dee films, drives a Chevrolet, and tunes into Beatles. He studies Government, Mechanical Drawing, English and Bookkeeping, plays baseball and basketball, plans college or trade school after graduation, and aims to enjoy life.

Four A H S Seniors Advance to State Speech Contest

At the district contest held February 22 in Orange City four of the sixteen A H S contestants earned an average rating of one. JoLyn Tucker interpretive prose Carol Gant interpretive poetry Sandy Sypherd original oratory and Wanda Brown interpretive poetry qualify for the state contest to be held March 21.

Freshmen Poets Debate in History Class

The article notes nearly all poems were authored by freshmen and several preferred anonymity. Last week history discussions evolved into lively debates as students explored poetic themes.

Miss Teenage America to Speak at Des Moines Breakfast

Judy Doll of Navarre Ohio aged 17 and Miss Teenage America 1964 will be a featured speaker March 12 at the 33rd annual breakfast for Iowa Girls High School State Basketball tournament finalists in Des Moines. More than 300 people from 16 finalist teams attend. Doll will discuss traffic safety and seat belt use. The appearance is coordinated with Ford Motor Company Lincoln Mercury Division, where she serves as Youth Safety Spokesman. She earned her title in Dallas last November and will reference safety demonstrations seen at Ford Dearborn proving grounds. The breakfast is sponsored by the Retail Merchants Bureau of the Greater Des Moines Chamber of Commerce.
