World War Bonus Bill Splits GOP, Passes Senate

Congressman Longworth led nearly all Republicans to desert the Hoover administration and back a bill raising the World War veteran bonus from 22 to 50 percent of face value. The Senate approved 72 to 12 as administration leaders warned a veto would fail. The House followed with related measures funding veterans hospitals and homes, while drought relief and other fiscal items moved forward. The session also featured postmaster and postal reform debates, with Hoover signing a 44 hour week for postal workers and calls for further cost-cutting.
