Flood Control Meeting Shows Deep Split Over Big Sioux Plan

Proponents of two flood control methods debated in Akron at an American Legion Hall session attended by Iowa Governor Norman Erbe and South Dakota Governor Archie Gubbrud. The nearly two hour meeting produced no agreement or commitments, though both governors urged continued study and discussion. Local officials and residents stressed the need to curb Big Sioux flooding, with tensions between upstream impoundments and channel improvements, while concerns about costs, land, and recreation featured prominently. The session also highlighted differing views on preserving wildlife and the impact on local infrastructure and economy. The article notes the event followed by a Sioux City Journal report and mentions the ongoing sewage plant site issue linked to the proposed channel work.
