Union County 4-H Public Speaking Contest winners are John Curry Junior Boys Becky Cooper Junior Girls and Patti Fitzgerald Senior. They will compete in the state contest July 29 in Huron. Alternate entries crowded and other participants listed.
Word arrived of the death of J Miles Cunningham aged 78 at a nursing home in Red Wood City California on June 11 He was born November 20 1892 on a farm near Le Mars and attended Le Mars schools He married Inez Nybloom on December 15 1916 He worked with his father in the Akron hardware business He is survived by his wife a son Ralph of Red Wood City a daughter Mildred Shearon of Elk Point and a sister Madge Buswell of Sioux City
Navy Airman Apprentice James M. Kelley, son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Kelley of Route 1 Westfield Iowa, completes recruit training at the Naval Training Center San Diego after a 1970 Westfield High School graduation. Remarks attacking the present administration drew applause among older guests, contrasting anti authority sentiment with belief in American freedom to poke fun as reported in Random Thoughts Postville Herald.

Jim Snow son of Mr and Mrs Wendall Snow starts basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. He will serve four years in the Army Securities Agency after graduating Akron High School in 1969 and working two years in the parts department of Dirks Motor Co Akron. Two hundred people from Akron Remsen Marcus Hinton Sioux City Orange City and Le Mars attended the Brentwood Good Samaritan auxiliary Flower Garden Tour in Le Mars on Monday Flag Day. Twelve private gardens were open including those of N C Newendorp Frank Lauters Glen Knage Gail Gilmore Elmer Phillips Tom Weeks William Sturges and Dr Gerald Khr. Refreshments were served on the Dr Ihrke home patio by Mrs John Brangwin Jr and Mrs Merle Truesdell with coffee poured by Mrs Fredda Nicholson and punch by Julie Ihrke. Co chairs were Mrs Charles Down and Mrs Russell Knapp. Proceeds support Brentwood Good Samaritan Center residents.

George F. Albright aged 76 of Akron died Thursday at Akron hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church Brunsville with Rev Olaf Rossing officiating and burial in St. Peter cemetery. He was born October 21, 1894 near Merrill and married Anna Marienau September 20 in Johnson township near Le Mars. They farmed in Grant township for 20 years before 1996. He worked for Plymouth county highway commission until 198? retirement and moved to Brunaville. He joined St. Peter Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife three sons Arthur Hinton William Sioux City and Marlin Brunsville two daughters Ivys Small Akron and Mrs Clifford Wheldon Aberdeen 5 D 16 grandchildren and a great grandchild.
