Ford Rouge plant penicillin treats infections in days
At Ford Motor Company Rouge plant hospital, external infections among workers are treated with crude penicillin produced in the hospital laboratory. The process, adapted from work by Dr. George Robinson and Dr. James Wallace, uses Penicillium Notatum grown on gauze with a starch sugar gelatin and yeast medium. After five days growth, crude penicillin forms golden yellow globules saturated in gauze to apply over the infected area.
