Wage Gut Sweeps Rail Jobs Across United States
The labor board plans wage cuts affecting maintenance of way workers and other railway staff, potentially saving about 50 million dollars annually starting July 1. Cuts could extend to 400,000 workers with maintenance wages dropping from 38–40 to 23–23 cents per hour, as orders cover 500,000 shop and 200,000 clerical and other employees. The move follows the 400 million dollar freight rate reduction by the Interstate Commerce Commission.
