Flora fire chief still leads 1920 formed volunteer force at 90
Edwin Dufay Yeck known as Uncle Fay heads Flora Illinois volunteer fire department he formed March 28 1920 now 90 years old and still in charge for four more years. He recalls early equipment a two wheel hose cart and draymen earning a dollar. The 30 volunteers include mayor police chief bank cashier and theater owner who fight fires without pay. Yeck works 8 to 5 at a desk under a stair and keeps two pumper trucks aged 13 and 8 years. He says Flora locals call him Uncle Fay and he plans to serve through his term while reflecting on his long career in firefighting and as a barber prior to joining the department.
