Poultry Egg Quality Needs Better Handling Practices

Poultry Extension specialist H. H. Alp explains that fertile eggs from roosters in warm months cause losses totaling about 5 million dollars in 1980. He urges double to triple daily egg gathering, cooling before casing, cool storage at 82 to 60 degrees, clean facilities, fresh litter, and adequate nesting space to reduce dirt, breakage, egg eating, and floor laying.

A Dakota Farmer guide outlines a chick mash formula using 150 lb ground yellow corn, 100 lb wheat bran, 100 lb oat flour, 75 lb wheat shorts, 50 lb meat scrap. Add alfalfa leaf meal per 100 lb mash if no greens. use bone meat if meat scrap absent. mix 1 lb salt and 1 pint cod liver oil per 100 lb mash. cod liver oil blended with bran first. Successful Pullet Raising Netting 27 Cents A Pullet

Anna Corrigan of Dakota County Minnesota raised eighty pullets between October 18 and November 16 laying 1,150 eggs in eighty days. She fed 300 pounds of egg mash and two bushels barley plus one and a quarter bushels wheat with alfalfa leaves oyster shells and cod liver oil. Feed cost was four cents while income reached 31.08 dollars, about 83 cents per dozen, yielding a net return of 21.74 dollars or 27 cents per pullet for Capper's Farmer.

Prairie Farmer reports at Ohio State University tests on chickens of identical breed and conditions found feeding part of the ration as a wet mash increased production by 24 eggs per bird over a year compared with a dry-only ration.
