London reports heavy fighting in days past near the Somme has diminished in intensity with Sunday only featuring heavy bombardments. In Lutek region the eastern front sees renewed heavy fighting as Russians push forward.
Rev. W. A. P. Camp and his wife, Canadian missionaries, were stabbed to death by a burglar early Sunday morning at their Karuizawa summer cottage. The weapon used was a Japanese short sword. Karuizawa, an American missionary summer center, is greatly excited by the murder.
New York reports that former Venezuelan president Cipriano Castro, admitted in 1912 after a six week detention on Ellis Island, was refused admission again on July 16 upon arrival aboard the steamer Vauban at Port of Spain Trinidad.
The Harahaa Jaye bridge in Memphis Tennessee spans the Mississippi River and is claimed to be the river’s largest structure. It opens to traffic at a cost of five million dollars, with a total length of about three miles including approaches. the bridge proper extends 2,600 feet. Construction began in June 1918.
King Constantine escaped a deadly fire that destroyed the Tatol royal summer residence last week. He was trapped by flames and fainted but was rescued by soldiers and removed from the danger zone. M. Dr. D. W. Edgar longtime Ames physician and city figure collapsed while driving across the Iowa State College campus. The car slowed and stopped, his head fell back, and bystanders found him dead with his foot off the clutch causing the transmission to drop from gear. Cause of death given as heart failure.
Alonzo Franklin, Kossuth County’s longtime resident, died at his Algona home at age 104 years and two months. Born in New York on May 2, 1812, he remained mentally sharp until death. He leaves a son in Creston and two sons in New York state. His wife passed away two years ago.
Des Moines Bureau of Insurance inspector will propose a lower fire insurance rating after examining the water system fire limits and newly installed fire apparatus. The recommended change aims to save property owners thousands annually.
A crowing rooster woke Clayton and Oliver Frush four miles from Pleasantville, saving them from a deadly house fire that engulfed the Frush hennery. The kitchen had collapsed and most clothing was left behind as the home burned.
