Maharajah Jai Singh creates unique Indian astronomical observatories

In seventeenth century India Maharajah Jai Singh pursued astronomy by founding five observatories at Delhi Jaipur Ujain Benares and Mathura. He gathered books sent workers abroad for data and built metal and masonry instruments up to hundred feet high. Observations were meticulously recorded and later valued by modern astronomers. He died in 1743 with his consorts and attendants reportedly perishing on his funeral pyre.
