Winter's Toll Hits Union County Roads Hard
The Elk Point Leader Courier reports a severe winter and spring floods damaged Union county roads, bridges, culverts and dikes, with repairs costing about 112000 dollars. Union county maintains 204 miles of road plus one township and all bridges, staffed by three maintainers. Oil roads will be resealed this season if weather allows.

County officials outline a resealing program using about 400000 gallons of asphalt and 10000 tons of cover aggregate at an estimated $1200 per mile. Eight miles of Contract work on County Road 18 west of Alcester is under way with $120000 county cost and $250000 total. Federal Aid funds cover the balance. State contracts include east end of Spink Akron road to Akron bridge and rebuilding from U S 77 to Riversioux this summer. Fifteen miles reshaped and graveled, six bridges rebuilt this spring, 23 repaired and backfilled. Hawarden bridge approach required 400 tons of rock and 67 tons of earth after flood damage.

Unrealistic speed limits across Iowa cities and towns
Carl Schach, safety and traffic engineer for the state highway commission, urged state action to standardize and raise speed limits in urban areas.
