South Dakota Iowa boundary bill affects 53 students at school

A recently introduced House bill in the South Dakota legislature would curb cross state student enrollment between South Dakota and Iowa. It stems from West Sioux Iowa’s halt on new Hudson South Dakota enrollments. The measure would let South Dakotans study in Iowa only if Iowans face no restriction on South Dakota attendance. Current AHS students are unaffected.

Fremont Memory Sparks Akron High Confusion

Karen Frerichs daughter of Alvin and Mrs. Frerichs, born Hawarden June 16, 1946, is a senior at Akron high. She has sisters Elaine 26 and Judy 20 and brother Bob 19, attends St. John’s Lutheran Church, active in Luther League and choir, loves applesauce, favors blue, and admires Richard Chamberlain. Westfield Leads Fourth War Bond Drive in First District

Twenty years ago Westfield town topped the Fourth War Bond drive in the First district. Postmaster J C Kennedy reported Akron post office sold 1948 stamps and stamped paper totaling 10 857 30, the best year on record, surpassing 1947 by over 1 000. Local obituaries note Peter E Saklinder 79 died January 11 1944 in Martin IA. Dr Geo Mattison mourns his brother Harry 61 of Ponca Neb January 21 1944. Sioux City police arrested two men for the night liquor store robbery in Akron. William H Neary left Thorson Drug Store for Teller Drug Co Sioux City. January weather mild with drizzle. Grant Gassman bought partner Bertel Shoulberg’s share in Shoulberg and Gassman garage. An A H S boys and girls basketball team split games at Ireton but swept Westfield. Bus Nall, serving in Italy, wrote home to say meeting Marguerite Martin and cousin Lt Charles Fletcher among locals. in Africa he saw Lester Kapfer and Bernard Lucken. Local married men enlistments include Bernard Markus in Navy and Iver Pollock in Marines, Markus closing bakery for the duration, and a Plymouth county group of 26 heading to Fort Crook Neb.

City Basketball League heats up as Peck's Comets lead

Thirty years ago ten teams battled in the City Basketball League with Peck's Comets leading the pack. Akron community band's two part winter program featured

Four decades back Akron residents enjoyed a two part winter concert under M V Santos. Local newlyweds Lee Sloutenburg received a reception. Akron Implement Co. burned with loss around 5000. Fire blamed on faulty wiring. Akron teams carried losses in Sioux City hockey, while several marriages and births were noted along with a child's death from measles.

Sixty years ago Lars J Erikson died at his home northwest of town in Union county after a brief pneumonia illness on January 26 1904 He homesteaded in Union county after coming from Sweden Survived by wife daughter Selma two sisters and one brother Funeral at Union Creek Lutheran church burial in church cemetery The Milling company was hauling dirt to reinforce its milldam against flood water in the Big Sioux River. Farmers who expect to place wheat oats barley rye grain sorghum soybeans and flaxseed produced in 1963 under price support loans or purchase agreements have only a short time until the deadline date of January 31 according to Cecil Kennedy county ASCS chairman He issued the reminder because early applications will avoid delays that could occur near the deadline The producer who expects to place farm stored grain under loan can expect that the necessary inspection of the storage building and testing of samples for grade and moisture content will take several days When the commodity is stored in a commercial warehouse some what less time is required to process the loan All forms are to be completed in time for the money to be disbursed not later than February 17

Farmers in Monona Plymouth and Woodbury counties Iowa increasingly rely on long term loans. In 1963 the Sioux City Federal Land Bank Association issued 1,000,400 dollars in new loans, 251,900 more than 1962, aiding expansion and tech upgrades. The 900 borrower-members received 27,700 in dividends.
