Westfield Community Updates Hostess Steps In For Iris Mulfinger

Westfield notes Shirley Banks acted as hostess in Iris Mulfinger’s absence. A and B boys teams set to play at Sargeant Bluff Friday January 21 hosting Meriden Cleghorn. January 25 travelogue planned for high school assembly January 27. Board of Education met January 13 1965 with all members present. Tuck pointing to be done by R Masonry Co and connection to city water approved. Discussed Titles I program and applying for district funds. Furnace motor and other electrical parts to be checked and two bus motors needing repair. Westfield Tuesday Club met January 11 with 12 members. Federation conventions announced for March 31 at Merrill and April 19-20 at Sioux City. January 29 club dinner for Rural Carriers. Adventures in Reading progress noted Iris Mulfinger read 51 books. State president reported 64 945 boxes of Iowa note paper sold. Alice Jangsen recalled early local store and Wm Chapman. Doris Lackman and Genevieve Williams led Crimean War and Second French Empire lessons. John Goldhorn and Benny Siems fished New Year’s Day. Beaver and West Fork water running. caught several fish including a 10 pound northern pike.

Special Education Training Programs Announced by Iowa State

The Iowa State Department of Public Instruction, funded by a U S Office of Education grant, outlines short term in service institutes on work study for educable mentally retarded students February 23 24 26 1966 with stipends of 15 dollars daily. Additional institutes follow in March and April 1966 covering emotionally disturbed and hearing impaired children. Summer traineeships offer 15 dollars daily with up to 75 dollars weekly plus up to 75 dollars weekly for institutions. Fellowship grants support full time graduate study for handicapped education, with five recipients already in training since September 1965.

Iowa payrolls rise in 1964 first quarter report

The U S Department of Commerce Census Bureau reports Iowa private nonfarm payrolls taxed under social security reached 612 million in 1964 Q1, up 15 percent from 1962. Manufacturing leads with 43 percent of payroll, while employment totals stand at 41,218 mid-March 1964, with Polk and Linn counties showing notable gains. The CBP-64-17 price is 70 cents, with data to be reassembled in five volumes and available on tapes and punch cards.

Medicare Enrollment Push For Sioux City Area

Social Security Administration reports mailing to 4.5 million over 65 nationwide as Medicare enrollment rises. In Sioux City area about 42,000 are eligible with over 85 percent of card recipients choosing medical insurance. Enrollment deadline is March 31 1966 for those turning 66 by January 1 1966 to secure full protection when the program begins July 1 1966.

Civil Defense Education Program begins in Remsen Iowa

A teacher training class for Civil Defense Education Program started January 12 at St. Mary's High School Remsen Iowa. It runs 7 to 10 PM each Wednesday for five meetings with certified teachers approved after fifteen hours training by a Public Instruction staff member. Non certified candidates will be evaluated on the basis of the fifteen hour course. For more information contact D Marvin Waltz Assistant Coordinator Civil Defense Adult Education. Cancer Crusade Planning Meet Set in Sioux City

Representatives from 13 northwest Iowa county chapters of the American Cancer Society will gather in Sioux City for a one day crusade planning meeting Friday January 21. The session at the YMCA begins with 9 30 a m registration. The goal is to review plans for an extensive education and fund raising effort in April involving more than 45000 Iowa volunteers.
