Washington officials from the Agriculture Department say farmers are likely to plant more corn acreage in 1967 than the 7 percent rise suggested by a late year survey. They expect a 15 to 18 million acre increase to top roughly 95 million planted last year, with an educational campaign planned during February and March signup periods. The department also noted a 4.5 million acre rise in soybeans from 61.9 million acres across 26 states, though officials did not push further efforts to boost vegetable crops.

40 years ago a new creamery was launched in the former power house at the anil with W H Wellans from A Bany Minn as manager and pro polabor. Alf Tresler recovering from injuries after a wagon was struck by an engine at a railroad crossing. Frank Moffatt, 64, a pioneer of Washtield township, died December 30, 1926 at his daughter’s home. Two seniors Michael Edgerton of Manning High and Peter Soler of Washington High Cedar Rapids were named Iowa winners to attend Washington DC January 22 to 28 as guests of Senators Hickenlooper and Miller. Alternate Thomas Melley of Wahlert Dubuque also chosen.
Milk producers in Plymouth County may join a three day dairy management short course on January 12, 19, and 26 at 10:00 a.m. in the Correctionville Community Building. Sponsored by Extension Services across six counties, the program covers the 4 M’s of milk production with Iowa State University specialists presenting on milking machines, mastitis, nutrition, herd health, and records. Participants from all regions are urged to register at the Plymouth County Extension Office with a $2.60 fee.

State Board of Social Welfare announces about a seven percent rise in monthly ADC payments starting February. Basic aid will rise from 75 to 82 percent of total need for most ADC families, with exact changes varying by family size and special cases in non parental and foster arrangements.
District Director Ernest W. Bacon warns farmers and non highway gas and lubricating oil users may claim credits on Form 4136. Credits: four cents per gallon gas and six cents per gallon oil for farming or non highway use, two cents per gallon gas and six cents per gallon oil for power boats and similar uses. Credits offset income tax or refunds may be filed for the first three quarters of the tax year, with $1000 thresholds. New law allows a tentative carryback of un invested investment credits. Taxpayers use Form 1189 for tentative carryback applications and must attach a computation. Filing deadline is the end of their filing year. Prior rules required Form 843 for investment credit carryback claims.
