A fire damaged the upper portion of the Lester Wakeman residence occupied by Abe Mudgett. A J Claeys born January 9 1914 a son to Alf Tresler and wife Cecile Lorraine Bennett and Lyle Strong born January 14 1914 at the home of the bride's parents Rev R L Stuart officiating. Elva MecCanon of Des Moines Iowa and Charles Green of Akron wed New Year's Day 1914 at the McCanon home Des Moines to reside on a farm in Johnson Township. August Henke farm house west of town occupied by Joe St Joe and Pat Boden destroyed by fire from a defective chimney.

U S Department of Agriculture scientists at the National Animal Disease Laboratory developed a quick, inexpensive diagnostic for hog cholera. The test uses tissue culture with fluorescent dye and anti hog cholera serum to differentiate infected cells under ultraviolet light. It may aid eradication programs though field trials and official approval are pending.

Sociology students visit State Mental Hospital Cherokee
On Monday January 6 sociology students toured the State Mental Hospital at Cherokee. They visited the cafeteria kitchen canteen library infirmary and wards for alcoholics and admitting patients. The hospital employs about five hundred patients alongside regular staff, and padded cells and straight jackets have been replaced by drug treatments. Students found the trip educational and enjoyable.
