Mr and Mrs Luther Boyles bought a used piano at a bargain price in Decatur Illinois. While inspecting the instrument they found an 85 cent coin stash behind the keyboard and negotiated the price down by another 85 cents.
Mark Darrell, a young American lumberman, falls for Madame Madeleine Kinross at a Canadian timberland near At Victor. She rebuffs him, claiming her husband is alive. Her suitor, lawyer Morac Brouseac, grows hostile. Mark is attacked by three men, bound and left in a cabin as Nat Pare alerts to the smoke and Miles’s men rally at the tavern to face the danger.
Nat Page leads twenty five lumbermen through choking smoke toward a blazing mill cabin to save Monsieur Darrell. Amid the blaze Eric Kinross learns Broussac hid money and plots escape with Madeleine as Broussac flees by yacht in fog, Andre Galipeault attacking Broussac en route.
A foreboding scene unfolds as lumbermen struggle through a raging fire seeking Mark in a cabin. Eric Kinross confronts the hotel set, demanding André Galipeault and discovering his wife remains at the lighthouse as kinross faces murder charges and revenge.
In a fog shrouded scene Eric Kinross reveals a plot to kill Horace Broussac. The seigneur remains silent as gossip and jealousy surface among the conspirators, with Darrell the target and Broussac described as a dangerous figure.
A mosaic of Manhattan lore traces old piers, Wall Street pirates, and Greenwich Village artists. It notes Chinatown fruits from Long Island, West Street’s waterside history, Bowery secrets, and notable sites from Battery to Harlem, with curios on parks, the art commission, Radio City, and housing for the needy.
