Death of Associate Justice Joseph R Lamar

Washington January 4 Joseph Rucker Lamar associate justice of the United States Supreme Court died at his home after several months illness He was 57 years old The immediate cause was gradual heart failure hastened by inflammation of a lung He would have completed five years on the bench had he lived Joseph Lamar was appointed by President Taft in 1910 one of the few justices named by a president of differing political faith He rose from relative obscurity in Alabama to the Supreme Court and later served as United States commissioner in the 1914 Niagara mediation between the United States and Mexico The record notes his distinguished service in this role.
