Dakota Blizzard of 1873 Swept Yankton With Violent Winds
An 1888 book copy recounts a Dakota Blizzard in mid April 1873. Yankton saw winds averaging 89 mph for about 100 hours on the 15th and 62 mph for 24 hours, with drifting snow like sand. The Seventh Cavalry camped there. many officers and men sought shelter with residents for over 40 hours. Gov and weather bureau clashed over warnings.

Don Sitzmann of Elkhorn township was elected District Commissioner at the Biennial meeting in LeMars on February 17, succeeding Walter Muecke whose term ends June 30. John Luken 79 of Brunsville died February 17 after a six month illness. A lifelong Plymouth County resident and retired farmer born April 8, 1881, he married Emma Montagne in 1906. Surviving are his widow, son Darrell of Brunsville, daughter Ione Reese of Brunsville, two brothers Joe of LeMars and Nick of Kansas City, two sisters Clara Luken of Marcus and Lucille Joynt of Marcus.

Local farmer and businessman laid to rest in LeMars
Four grandchildren survive with him, preceded in death by his parents. He farmed 28 years in Washington township, moved to Westfield to run a filling station for 12 years, and retired to Brunsville. Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. Saturday at St James Catholic Church in LeMars, with burial in Calvary Cemetery there.
