Boys Sectional Cage Finals Set For Friday Evening

Merrill and Hawarden High schools won opening games in the Boys State Sectional Basketball tournament here this week. Merrill upset Union Consolidated 45 to 28 in Class B while Hawarden beat Akron 89 to 32 in Class A. Merrill meets Westfield in the Class B semifinals. Liberty Consolidated and Hinton drew byes. Hawarden will face LeMars in Class A finals. Liberty upset Hinton 26 to 25 and Merrill defeated Westfield 61 to 31 to reach Friday’s Class B final at 7 30 PM. Both Class A and B winners advance to the State District tournament the week of March 6.

Burglary at Brunsville Bank and Elevator

Thieves broke into First State Bank at Brunsville early Friday morning and attempted to force the vault door but fled leaving tools. No money was taken from the vault though a smaller safe held funds. Bank president Henry Harris said no money was kept in the vault. Herman J Harris, owner of the Harris elevator, also faced a burglary with about 5 dollars in cash an overcoat and around 1000 dollars in checks stolen. most checks were stopped. No arrests reported.

Akron Junior High cage team to play in Plymouth County tourney

The Akron Junior High boys basketball team will compete in the Plymouth County Junior High tournament at Merrill on February 27, 28, March 1 and 3. Akron opens vs Westfield at 7:30 pm, with Remsen v Liberty and Kingsley v Mervill on Monday and Tuesday. Semifinals are March 1 and finals March 3, and Akron fields an all-Freshman squad seeking top honors.

Soil conservation school slated for LeMars

A select group of Plymouth county farmers will attend a three day soil conservation training school at LeMars Eagles Hall from February 23 to March 1. The program runs 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily and features five Iowa State College specialists covering soil fertility pasture renovation forage crops and farm organization. Death comes to a former Akron woman Sunday

Florence Geneva Harkness 84 of 1900 Wall Street Sioux City died in a city hospital Sunday February 19 after an illness of several weeks. She was born January 18 1866 in New York married James Harkness December 20 1886 at Primghar. Surviving include husband three sons Cecil Guy Clarence four daughters Lela Rhoten Vina Riehle Ethel French Pearl Rupe and three brothers.
