Readers vent about dreary skies and sun delays while hoping for warmth. A bank time and temperature sign is back online and sparrow troubles for Wilfred Dirks spark local help requests. Basketball fans praise coaches Kusler and Utesch amid commentary on sportsmanship and elm tree removal plans for summer.
Local notices recount Mrs. Irene Parker’s return from Meza Arizona and Arvada Colorado to family in Iowa. Numerous visits involve the McInnis, Davis, and Mason households with relatives from Hawarden Akron and Burtonsville plus guests from Sioux City Westfield Ames and Sioux Falls.
The Good News Inc. owners and publishers under manager F Shorty Hazel run a weekly Akron Iowa paper based in Plymouth County. It is issued every Thursday and entered as second class mail matter on September 26, 1901.
Visitors and luncheon guests included Jim Moller Colin Collmann Mrs Jack Lake of Sioux City and Mrs G Moller. The week featured visits to Hawarden Fairview and Omaha, several small gatherings and a 62nd wedding anniversary for Mr and Mrs Harry Grady of Rockford.
The Book and Thimbleclub met in the Akron high school auditorium at 2 p.m. on Tuesday February 11 with drama students presenting the one act play Couldn't I Kiss You Goodnight. Dorothy Finzen presided, Ruth Millard hosted devotions from Matthew 5, and 14 members answered roll call with The Best Drama Ive Seen.
The Friendship and Service club met January 23 at Myrtle Henriksen's home with 16 members and one guest. Fern Roy led a family history program after a program on poetry and prose, with reports discussed and adjournment at 9 20 p.m.
The Rural Home Culture club met Friday February 7 at Ina Young's home for a noon pot-luck. Eleven members answered roll call with a health food. Ruth Mitchell spoke on the Akron Student Loan Fund past history and rulings. Beth Finzen presented Health and Nutrition. Valentine plates were packed and delivered to shut ins after adjournment.
Mr and Mrs Claus Frerichs of Le Mars celebrated their golden wedding with a Sunday open house at St. John American Lutheran church parlors hosted by their seven children. They were married February 18 1925 by Rev J J Vollmar. Their children include Gerald Richard Stanley George Leon Ardyth Fisher Carol Fick and others with 27 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mrs. Al Hawks visited daughter in Merrill Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. O J Port returned from a 3600 mile trip to Gulftown New Hampshire Vermont and Connecticut to see Ken Port family. Joe English mountains in New Hampshire feature towers dating to early settlers. Dennis Powell family visited Akron. Marta Brosz visited Pierre South Dakota. Brent Dreeszen celebrated 4th birthday. Ed Nelson visited Borchers in Le Mars. Brian Brosz attended wedding of Miss Charlie Curry to Rollie Tramp in Vermillion. Curry was Miss USD 1974. Park Rapids visit by Mrs. Joe Caskey. Eber Waterman Kingsley joined Ed Nelson for Sunday dinner. Julie Buryanek Janet Hasenbank Melinda Dion joined Brian Brosz at Vermillion Disciplies concert. Westfield girls beat Remsen Union 61 58 in basketball. Westfield boys vs Akron set for Feb 24 at Hinton. Chili and chicken soup supper Feb 19 funds for state tourney costs. Frenchie the Clown program Feb 20 for K 6. Hobo Hop dance Feb 28 with 7th grade. 8th graders’ magazine drive starts March 4.

Akron Golf Club members host a potluck supper and card night on Sunday February 23 at 6 30 p m The kitchen committee includes Elaine Michael Oma Gassman Ethel Dirks and Marge Lucken The game committee lists Jerry Celia Mary Smith and Ed Dirks Pinochle 500 and Bridge will be played.
Mrs Anna Vindahl celebrated her 94th birthday on Friday February 14 with a family dinner and the traditional birthday cake and ice cream. Those present were Mr and Mrs Neil McLane Sr and Mrs Norma Haan and Berk. She received many gifts cards and calls and thanks LCW staff at Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Rural Home Culture Club for goodies and well wishes.
Tom Waterbury of Sioux City has joined the sales department of Concrete Pipe and Machinery Co. He has worked there since June 1966 and the firm serves all 50 states and about 50 foreign firms. A 1962 Akron Community high school graduate, he is the son of Mrs. Gertrude Waterbury of Akron.
Mrs Nettie J Anderson 87 longtime Akron resident dies January 25 1975 in Van Nuys California. She lived on a farm near Akron with husband William A Anderson until 1947. Survived by son Alvin W Anderson Sherman Oaks California daughter Evelyn Mae Anderson Van Nuys sister Mrs Frank Emmick Sioux City two grandchildren and four others.
Residents enjoyed two films Our Gang Comedy and Derby Days at the nursing home. A flurry of visitors from Sioux City Akron and Westfield dropped by for chats, meals and gifts while Valentines and Easter Seals drives filled envelopes.
Regular school board meeting held February 13 with all members present. Budget hearing approved the general fund 513675 and school house fund 21632. Monthly finance hot lunch activity and transportation reports approved. Bills approved. Teacher evaluations presented by Mr Schoppenhorst and Mr Pavlik. Meeting adjourned.
Akron TOPS club met February 12 at 100 Reed St with 14 members. Bake sale funds financed a new club scale. Weight records show 52 pounds lost since organization three weeks ago. Treasurer’s report and other business were completed. Judy Klemme, secretary.
The Country Gardeners club met January 29 at Rena Ahrendsen’s home with ten members present. The constitution was read by Kroksh. Mata Stinton distributed 0 programs and discussion followed. Marge Jelken was elected program member and Della Dir Ubraran. Jane H Iman presented an engaging program on Birds and Insects Help Us. Seufel Kroksh served as secretary.
