The Preston Pearls 4-H club met February 12 at Nancy Koch home. Officers reported a $51.95 balance. A junior roller skating party is set for March 14, a summer tour was discussed, and a bake sale planned for March 26. Next meeting is March 12 at Susan Lucken home. Nancy Koch gave a cinnamon roll demonstration and lunch.
The Scat tered 4-H club met at Allen Beech’s home after a 2 p.m. bowling party at Akron Bowl with eight members present. Cynthia Anderson led the pledge and Julia Anderson delivered the 4-H flag pledge. Minutes and secretarial report approved. no old business. New business covered fair project plans and 4-H shirt orders. Adjournment moved by Cynthia Anderson with Jane Andresen seconding. Lunch enjoyed. Julia Anderson reported.
Esther Wiberg celebrates her 80th birthday with relatives from Oldham Sioux Falls Wakonda and Alcester joining dinner at Union Creek Lutheran church. The gathering recalls Swedish immigrant roots tracing John Lindberg and Christine Larson to the Sioux Valley area and the family history leading to Esther born February 13 1897. Jeanne McNeely of Boulder Colorado sent a flowering plant wish from The McNeelys reflected in a letter read at the event.

The Rural Home Culture club met at Pat Dennison's home for a potluck luncheon. Guest speaker Lynn Nitzschke from Akron presented a program on the metric system. Community schools contributed, cookbooks were distributed, and members were urged to bring handiwork to the next meeting.
Rural Akron couple Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Krose announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their son Randall Joe to Kelly Lynn Miller daughter of Harvey Miller of Hawar den. A March wedding is planned.
Nita Huber operates a Tacoma drive-in with coffee priced at five cents. She says the cost per cup stays around four cents after groceries, cream, sugar, lids, and overhead. She vows not to raise the price despite rising coffee costs and believes the nickel price draws customers.
A compact home note shares two cherry based desserts. Cherry Bars mix margarine sugar vanilla eggs and flour then cover with cherry pie filling and bake. A optional pecan variation adds texture. Cherry Pie Mix Dessert blends shortening sugar eggs and remaining ingredients, tops with cinnamon sugar and bakes, serves warm or cold with whipped topping.
Margaret Schroeder of Rock Valley becomes president of the Mid-Sioux Opportunity board for 1977 in Remsen. She has served since 1974 and represents the Federated Women’s Club of Rock Valley. Other officers include Richard Hatz as treasurer, the Rev. Dean Orris as vice-chairman, and Pat Jacobs as secretary. the 15 member board covers Cherokee Ida Lyon Plymouth and Sioux counties overseeing services for elderly handicapped and low income families. The agency is funded by federal state and local sources plus private gifts.
Mr and Mrs Merl Fickbohm of Akron celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Friday February 11 with a family dinner at Round Table in Sioux Falls and a visit at the Sandvall home. Hosts were their children Curtis Elaine Sandvall Hawarden Duane Fickbohm and Dwight Fickbohm. Others attending included Victor Siemers Wilton Sandvall Alcester and Densel Roberts Hawarden. Bertha Staum and Merl Fickbohm wed February 11 1937 at Peace Lutheran rural Alcester. The couple has seven grandchildren.
Segar Friendship and Service Members of Friendship and Service Federated club met Jan. 27 1977 at the Akron high school. Beth Ross hosted with Martie Krause as co host. Members attended a community meeting by the Akron Industrial Development corporation at the school. Jeanne Hinrichsen chairs the spring program She Haw with committee including Joyce Thorson Dew Elkin Karen Willer Shirley Nelson Virginia Hartmann and Marge Dykstra. Ruth Mitchell guest and treasurer of Akron Federated clubs student loan fund spoke on the fund history and a proposal to convert the fund into a scholarship fund. Board and presidents will form a committee to set rules and regulations.
Nine year old Sherry Miller and Easter Seal campaign chair Mrs. Billie Ray met Governor Ray in Des Moines to witness the proclamation of Easter Seal Weeks March 1 to April 10. The campaign aims to raise 340000 for handicapped Iowans with services at Camp Sunnyside Des Moines Mason City and Sioux City.
Dracula headlining at Ye Olde Opera House, March 4 5 and 6, director Cynthia Hayes reports successful rehearsals. The theatre seeks love seat donations from the 1939 era and asks for volunteers and technical workers to support the production.
Mr and Mrs James Gieske of Sioux Falls announce the birth of son Mark Paul on Feb 13 1977 at a Sioux Falls hospital. Claudis Jacobsen is the mother. Grandparents include Wm Jacobson of Sioux City and Elmer Gieske of Hartford SD. Great grandparents are Harley Lewison of Akron. In Akron, Mr and Mrs Richard L Oetken announce their first child, daughter Andrea Lynn born Feb 11 1977 at Akron hospital weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces. Grandparents are Earl Oetken of Akron and Pete Friesen of Henderson NE. Great grandmothers Nora Schneider Hawarden and Margaretha Friesen Henderson. Pam Friesen is the former Mrs Oetken.
Plymouth county extension home economist Susan Merkley and Iowa State University horticulturist Ed Cott advise selecting heat tolerant blooms for Iowa. They list Cockscomb, Cosmos, Geranium, Strawflower, Marigold, Petunia, Moss Rose, Salvia, Zinnia and less common options like Spiderflower, Globe Amaranth, Nicotiana, Nierembergia, Scabiosa, Statice and Verbena. Plant in afternoon shade, use insulating mulch, and water deeply once or twice weekly to keep colors vibrant all summer.
