Westfield Community School Board met February 9 1967 with four members. It approved minutes and bills and reviewed consultant Bronsvold report noting new textbooks programs library and Title I remedial reading. Basketball scores show Westfield girls and boys teams across varsity and junior teams with leading scorers listed. upcoming games against Hinton Whiting and tournament play noted.
The regular meeting of the Johnson Jr Homemakers was held at Pat Taylor's home on January 30 with officer installations. New officers include Wendy Luk en president, Sylvia Bryant vice president, Karla Ootken secretary, Fay Luken president, Mary Miller historian, Marilyn Ruden reporter. Slides of coke schemes in winter scenes were shown and discussion of favors for Akron Hospital workers. A lunch was served by Mrs. Taylor and Pat.
The Raider Review presents editor roles and a long roster of reporters and staff. It lists February birthdays for Becky Orzis Nancy Small Bob Fletcher Linda Smiter Gate Gronemeyer Rickey Sorensen Roger Knecht Debra Gustafson Roxanne Klemme Beverly Mattas Been Kileshaver and others. It also notes grade level rosters and a 1949 birth announcement for Julie Marie Root with family details and school activities.
Becky Ornis born February 17 1949 in Sioux City Iowa is profiled as a senior at AHS with plans to attend Minnesota Bible College She participates in FHA and school activities and lists favorites while the bulletin notes January to February planning and Valentine Party preparations plus a report on the Sweethearts Ball and sixth grade math and social studies topics
The Crafft class celebrated effort with a note that hard work helps achieve goals. Students tested on per test scores and trial results. Four new fish joined the aquarium: a guppy, a gold platty, and two black Mollies. Two boys brought tape recorders to school, and a portable typewriter was used for Social Studies stories. The Second Grade learned dictionary use to improve spelling, and the class drew a Mr Alligator going to find a dentist, deciding to visit their own dentist over that of town.
The final regular game was Feb 6 with a Feb 13 playoff to decide the tie. Current standings show Jungle Bunnies 6 Mikers 10 6 9, The Checkmates 1, Carla’s Cavaliers 0 7, Sal’s Swingers 8 8, Rushie’s Ruthless Rebels 8 8&8, McCuill’s Criminals 10, ImLou’s Guts 6 11.

Twenty years ago weather delayed games but Akron High beat Kingsley 85 28 in a first round, then beat Hinton 43 36 in the finals, and lost to Merrill 34 82 in the championship. Akron girls sectionals saw wins by forfeit and defeats. Also noted are anniversaries, obituaries, wedding reports, births, and local civic notices from February 1947.
Years Ago A Walton League chapter formed there as Sioux City members attended the meeting. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Leo Houston of Vermillion South Dakota on February 11 1937 at Akron Hospital. Died Wilson N Cooley aged 78 February 5 1937 at his daughter’s home, a pioneer railroad man with 50 years service on the Chicago and Northwestern Dakota Division. Funeral at Burket home then Platteville burial. Mild mid February weather. infant Donald Ray Frerichs died February 9 1937 aged one and a half months.
Forty years ago Akron welcomed a modern Creamery under Mr Willens with contemporary machinery. Harry Hubbs return ed from Precott Arkansas where he helped build a new post office. Eugene and Earl Lias opened a new corn candy cabinet. Clyde Kinser became Milwaukee railroad agent here with his wife and son joining from Meckling South Carolina. Also noted were deaths, births, and local high school basketball results including ABS girls beat Westfield 124 to 10 and Hawarden 24 to 18.
Uniden County officials S. W. Hall and Henry Smith, Se., passed away in early February. Hall died February 2 and Smith on February 4, with local tributes expected.
A meeting discussed a Farmers Elevation project for a hero figure. A fire in a store basement threatened damage but was halted by prompt action. Alvin King departed for Marcus Town to seek work with Illinois Central. George Putnam began harvest work on the Big Sioux River. John Malmatrom took over Kendall Hotel management from Mrs. Florence Cooney. Johnson and Yeaton began their first excursion to Texas and New Mexico.
The February 24 1967 meeting at Spring Creek School District 28 invites voters to decide on joining Hoyt District Akron Community School District and accepting Pleasant Ridge and Sayles Districts into Spring Creek. Clerk Stanley Anderson notes the notice published in The Akron Register Tribune on February 16 and 23, 1967.
A Mount Hope Common School District No 47 board resolution authorizes dissolving the district and merging with Hoyt Common School District No 86. A special meeting for voters is set for February 24 1967 at 7 to 9 pm at Melvin Hitzemann home to approve the dissolution and merger.
