Economists See 1946 Poultry Income Dip

Rutgers economist Joan W. Carnecross predicts poultrymen will earn less in 1946 than 1945. After a record egg consumption of 300 per person last year, demand will decline due to lower consumer income, more red meat availability, and reduced military demand.

UN agency ships seeds to nine countries and China

Over 50 000 tons of seeds are being dispatched by the United Nations relief and rehabilitation administration for the spring planting season. The shipment includes cereal and vegetable seeds seed potatoes for human food and stock crops for animal feed plus forage grass and root crop seeds and industrial seeds for oil and fiber to boost production.

Profit margins by industry in 1943 44 study reveals margins

SEC survey on American industries shows meat packers with 4,732,038,000 in 1944 gross and 45,348,000 net, 1 percent of sales. Cigarette makers grossed 1,001,732,000 with 3.9 percent net. Dairy products 1,452,361,000 in sales net 2.1 percent. Distilleries 1,226,298,000 gross net 3.8 percent. Grocery specialties lead margins at 4.1 percent on 954,984,000 sales.

Vet Families May Go Overseas With Troop Moves

The War Department authorized families of commissioned and noncommissioned officers above staff sergeant to join troops abroad and cut training for replacements from 13 to 8 weeks. Travel to Europe starts after April 1, with moves to the Philippines Japan Korea and Ryukyus after May 1. Priorities favor officers with long overseas service who agree to two year stays. Recruits will finish conditioning abroad after basic here and receive seven days leave before embarkation.

Chiang Kai-shek Ends One Party Rule In China

Chiang Kai-shek announces that political parties may operate openly under legal rights as a consultative conference in Chungking closes. A national assembly will meet in May to draft a new constitution with over 2,500 delegates. Chiang’s Kuomintang holds 50 percent representation, the communists second.

Happy Harry Hale and the bunt that reshaped a champion

Ty Cobb recalls Harry Hale, a 6 foot 7 inch fastball pitcher from Happy Hollow who mentored Walter Johnson by teaching bunt strategy. Hale, signed for 37.50 to Atlanta, spurred Johnson to improve, altering Johnsons early Washington career and leaving Hale as Cobb’s favorite player despite a short major league run.
