The U S fisheries bureau advances artificial breeding of pearly mussels with promising profits. It costs about 20 cents to rear 1000 young. 13 000 reach two tons. A 4 1/2 ton harvest costs about 2 68 dollars, with a 50 percent loss making it 5 36. Shells for mother of pearl are currently valued at 885 per ton as the key commercial factor.
An Australian water shortage prompts use of rain tanks for drinking and bathing. A judge, arriving at a shack, bathes in a tank with no soap, claiming no spoilage of water.
