Harold Pirtle won the 1949 Southwestern Indiana wheat championship with a record 57 percent bushels per acre on an 11 acre Sullivan county field. He paired the crop with alfalfa and sweet clover, aided by soil tests, 3-12-12 fertilizer, and spring nitrogen to lift both grain and legumes.
