Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Gabel and family visited in the Gert Jacobs home Sunday afternoon. John A. Kale, 45, Merrill citizen and WWI veteran, died in Des Moines after a lingering illness. Interment with full military honors at St. Joseph Cemetery, LeMars. Strong local social notes follow with visits across Akron, Merrill, Ladysmith, and Des Moines.
Peter Pond born 1740 in Milford Connecticut left a restless life to join the British army at sixteen. He profited in Canada’s fur trade, led ventures from Michilimackinac to Prairie du Chien and Green Bay, helped found the Hudson Bay Company rival North West Company, and inspired Mackenzie’s voyage to the Pacific. He died in poverty after selling his interests in 1790. Western Newspaper Union.
A biographical sketch recalls Thomas Phelan, born in Ireland, who arrived in America at 21 seeking adventure. He fought in the Kansas border wars, served as a Union captain in the Civil War, and survived Quantrill's guerillas and Fenian clashes. He later became a notable swordsman in Kansas City before further injuries from Fenian attacks.
In 1898 Jack Pratt, aged 26, left the States for Alaska near Wrangell where he became a deep sea diver, prospector, hunter, mountie, saloon keeper and government agent. Known as Thirty Thirty for his rifle, he partnered with Tex Rickard in Nome to run a saloon and curb fights. He counted Rex Beach, Robert W. Service, Texas Guinan and Jack London among acquaintances, visited Chicago after 38 years, then returned to Wrangell to celebrate his deliverance from derby hats and formal living.
