Truman names Jesse M. Donaldson postmaster general

Postmaster General Hannegan steps aside after ill health and resignation. President Truman promotes Jesse M. Donaldson, a 42 year postal veteran, to lead the department. Donaldson began as a city letter carrier in Shelbyville Illinois in 1908 and rises to the top job. Hannegan plans to remain active and has taken an interest in the St. Louis Cardinals.

Railcar Shortage Eases Slightly After Long Peak

The railroad freight car shortage may be easing as September net installations rose to 7,182, the first monthly gain in 25 months, while shortages remain around 33,000 to 39,000 cars daily. Col. J. Monroe Johnson pushes to 16,000 cars a month by July 1948 with steel allotment boosts from the Iron and Steel Institute. Revenue freight handled is rising to levels not seen since 1930 despite the ongoing shortage and production limits.
