Voters credit government distribution of scarce goods as inflation concerns rise. Interior asks Congress for power to set price controls on coal and oil as part of anti inflation efforts.

The railroad freight car shortage may be easing as September net installations rose to 7,182, the first monthly gain in 25 months, while shortages remain around 33,000 to 39,000 cars daily. Col. J. Monroe Johnson pushes to 16,000 cars a month by July 1948 with steel allotment boosts from the Iron and Steel Institute. Revenue freight handled is rising to levels not seen since 1930 despite the ongoing shortage and production limits.
