Sorghum Emerges as Dry Weather Relief Crop in Sioux Land

Sorghum, long a midwest option, becomes center stage in Sioux land. About 160000 acres planted across 15 counties, forecast to yield around 8 million bushels valuing near 8 million dollars at roughly one dollar per bushel. Despite corn's larger output, sorghum’s drought tolerance expands its use.

Sorghum outlook in Siouxland hinges on weather and storage

The shift to forage sorghum last spring aimed to use subsoil moisture and avoid corn acreage limits. Seed sold at 1.75 a hundredweight, with a bushel weighing 56 pounds. Drying is the big unknown. a dry fall favors field drying, while a wet autumn like 1957 requires artificial drying. Elevators can handle storage, with three Sioux City elevators totaling 3 million bushels. Most agents expect sorghum attention to be temporary as farmers likely revert to corn oats and gay beans if moisture remains adequate. Storage space should not be a bottleneck despite a large crop, though individual farmers may face space issues. Grain will dry on the ground over winter and be moved in spring.
