Iowa Farm Outlook Summer Hog Prices Miss Expectations

ISU economist Gene Futrell notes hog prices have stayed below hoped levels yet remain relatively profitable. Prices fluctuated around mid June, with U S 13s 200 230 pound barrows and gilts near 21 to 22 per cwt in early August, about 4 under last year. Hog slaughter remains above last year. June 1 hog on farms inventory in 10 Cornbelt states shows gains for late summer marketing. Farrowing plans for 1967 fall hog crop and June-November plans are slightly below prior year, with potential upward revision. Futrell expects modest price improvement into early 1968 amid lower corn costs and possible longer farrowings beginning in spring 1968.

Payments to participating farmers under 1987 Feed Grain Program

Payments totaling 1 050 000 were mailed to Plymouth County farmers participating in the 1987 Feed Grain Programs. Producers earned about 2 000 000 in diversion and price support payments by diverting cropland to conservation uses and cutting feed grain production. Small bases of 25 acres or less received about 32 000 in diversion payments. The rest of the payments reflect price support for reduced feed grain output. Diversion covered 26 300 acres under the ASCS administered program aiming to align production with needs.
