Labor Day Weekend Safety Urges Curb Fatalities

Safety Commissioner Jack M. Fulton warned that Iowa roads see more deaths during Labor Day weekends than other holidays. He noted 98 deaths since 1961, with 27 in 1966, urging motorists to drive legally, avoid excess alcohol, and use safety belts to reduce the toll during the upcoming holiday period from 6 PM Thursday to midnight Monday.

Achievement Days End as State Fair Prep Begins

Plymouth County 4-H Girls Exhibit Clothing Projects at Iowa Fair

Eleven Plymouth County 4-H girls exhibited clothing projects at the Iowa State Fair. Blue placings included Marlys Hitzemann Akron for a skirt and Debbie Lake Hin-ton for a border. Red and white placings covered Play clothes Kim Collman Ireton and Marilyn Sullivan LeMars, among others. Grand Champion winners were selected to represent the Girls 4-H program for outstanding workmanship.

Village Bowl Motel Sold to Sioux City Family

The Village Bowl Motel at Alcester South Dakota was sold to Glen Bartels Irvin Bartels and Dorothy Harlow and daughters Sandra and Sharon Harlow all of Sioux City Iowa. A new VASCAR speed clocking device is being used by South Dakota Highway Patrol to measure vehicle speeds by time and distance across the state. The system can operate day or night and clocks cars moving behind or ahead of the patrol vehicle or at cross streets. About twenty five Hawarden residents have enrolled at Sioux Empire College for the coming term. Sioux Center now offers a public address and recording service by brothers Walt and Clarence Ver Hoef serving northwest town and nearby states. The Remsen Flower and Gift Shop joined Florafax Delivery Inc a major flowers by wire service. Maurice Orange City public schools opened with senior high classes in a new building in Orange City. Farmers Elevator at Kingsley topped out at 175 feet after cement work on the head house. West Lyon public schools near Inwood opened with total enrollment 1158. elementary 590 and high school 568. Beresford South Dakota filled its new water tower with sterilizing chemical for several days before use.

Picnic Held for Ohio Residents at Grand View Park

A memorial style picnic at Grand View Park in Sioux City honored Ohio visitors Mr. and Mrs. Jim Deutschman and son Jerry from Massillon. Dozens of relatives and friends from Sioux City Akron Rock Valley and Westfield attended including the Blum Lamoureux Heider and Bay families with Cathy Parry visiting from Fountain Valley California last week.

Clay County Fair Adds State Departments Tent for 1969
