Major Dick Bong Memorial Highlights Wartime Record
On the first anniversary of Maj. Richard I Bong of Poplar Wisconsin the memorial foundation reveals new facts about the ace of aces. Bong shunned limelight and credited parents and crew for heroism. He rose from teacher trainee to air cadet then instructor at Luke Field before Pacific and European combat, surpassing many records and earning the Medal of Honor on Leyte Island. He died testing an Army jet fighter on August 8, 1945 and is buried in Poplar. The foundation aims to honor all WWII airmen with engineering scholarships and a shrine at Poplar.
