Big Sioux River Improvement Plans Under Way
A U S Coast and Geodetic Survey crew begins mapping and surveying to straighten the Big Sioux River from Sioux Falls to the Missouri junction at Sioux City. Towers up to 100 feet will be erected for night surveys, with 25 towers, 28 trucks, and 23 trailers planned. Ferried by Lt. Commander Wennermark, this work accompanies flood control studies authorized in 1924, with channel straightening and levee networks to protect valley lands and Hawarden Iowa. Estimated total cost about 20 million dollars.
