Move In September Men To Train In October

Washington, D. C. The 687,000 men in the first increment of the army draft forces will be under infantry early in October. Crowder issued the first 30 percent of the quota for training at cantonments beginning September 6, then 16 and 30 percent on September 16 and 30, with the remaining 10 percent mobilized soon after. About 12,000 men reach each of the sixteen cantonments shortly after September 5, undergoing medical examination and assignment to skeleton units, with absorbed integration into the war machine by mid September. Local boards will draft workers for first sacraments to fit crop conditions, with draft workers shifted to later batches as needed. Provost Marshal General Crowder issued a supplementary ruling on discharges for dependents, holding that persons should not be discharged because of dependents resident abroad.

Food Administration Plans Wheat Control Board

Washington plans to regulate wheat distribution and manufacturing. Fire Truckes Planned for Camp Dodge in Des Moines

Des Moines reports a four station fire department to protect the wooden army city of 40 000 men at Camp Dodge. A federal fire superintendent arrives to supervise station placement and equipment. Fire chief fined for payroll padding scheme

Marshalltown former fire chief I T Kirby pleaded guilty months ago to defrauding the city by padding the department payroll and drawing funds for a supposed employee. He was fined 100 dollars plus costs by Judge Willett, Kirby made good the shortage when found and was discharged. Iowa Unit to France Sends Ambulance Corps Unit

The University of Iowa ambulance unit from Iowa City will depart Allentown with the second group of one thousand men to sail for France. The unit recently completed a ten day hike and is set to be outfitted to the last detail. It is noted as a well drilled section in camp. The Ames unit will stay at Allentown after ten days longer training.

Insane Man in Batavia Kills Town Marshal

W R Hanshaw the town marshal is shot and killed by James M Lewis in Batavia after Lewis, believed driven mad by heat, opened fire from a rifle as Hanshaw tried to reason with him. A dozen citizens formed a posse and killed Lewis after an hour of exchange of shots.

Iowa County Agents Reach 230000 Farm Folk With Farm Programs

Des Moines reports show state Agricultural Department county agents 28 in number, plus one home demonstration agent, operated from July 1916 to July 1917. They reached 230000 people, conducted 15000 meetings and demonstrations attended by 143000, made 699 farm visits per agent, and organized 103 projects plus a food conservation campaign during wartime.
